Adding Yoga To My Fitness Routine

Yoga has been my part of my life when I was very young and I have been practicing on and off but it was not that regular when I started weight lifting. This meant that the day I discovered strength training, it became my best friend. But growing up in India, I was also introduced to yoga early and always enjoyed practicing it.

As much as I love weight training, I also wanted to include yoga and there are lot of ways to combine both and I normally alter days.

Over the past year, I’ve realized that not only do they go together, but they also complement each other perfectly. Below are five benefits I have experienced by combining the two: 1. Strength and flexibility, 2. Endurance, 3. Controlled aggression and relaxation, 4. Workout of the mind body and soul , and 5. Better performance.

The main reason why I started yoga was to improve my muscular skeleton issues; especially my knee pain, migraine headaches and also when I discovered my pressure was high. So basically, this year I was focused to do yoga to improve health and strength.

My experience inspired me to pore over the scientific studies I collected in India and how yoga can be both beneficial to prevent diseases and help you recover from it.

My body is not perfect and I’m still struggling to gain strength and flexibility. During your first class, you probably won’t be able to touch your toes, never mind do a back bend. But if you stick with it, you’ll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible. You’ll also notice that aches and pains start to disappear. Strong muscles do more than look good. They also protect us from conditions like arthritis and pain ( knee pain in my case)

It perfects your postures . Whether our less than proper posture is due to all the time spent hunched over computers, or if it simply our nature that makes us want to protect ourselves, a few asanas can have you standing tall in no time.

It betters your bone health. Many postures in yoga require that you lift your own weight.

It increases blood flow and it has improved mine. Yoga gets more oxygen to your cells and encourages venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart, where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated.

Lord of the dance ( Natarajasana) : Begin from a standing position with the weight of the body on one foot as the opposite heel lifts up towards the buttocks with bent knee. The hand on the same side of the body as the bent knee reaches back to grasp the outside the foot or ankle. With the added resistance of the hand gripping the foot, the bent leg and the foot is then lift up away from the earth and the torso towards the back of the room until the thigh is parallel to the earth.

Benefit- Stretches the shoulder, the chest, the thighs, the knee, the groins and adornment. Strengths the leg and the ankles and improves balance.

So far my experience with yoga is amazing and its a great stress buster for me and I feel my overall work performance has improved.

How cute is this Minty Workout Outfit and I don’t know about y’all but when I wear cute workout wear, not only I’m more inclined to actually be active, but also makes me feel more confident in my abilities, which leads to be more focus and motivated.

  1. Excellent post. I lift weights 3 times a week and on two other days I take a 1 hour yoga class. The balancing in yoga helps with the lifting and flexibility is always a good thing.

    1. In American yoga schools they always have beginner, intermediate, and advance classes, but when I tried taking yoga in China, everyone was thrown into one class and so many other people were already so flexible I felt like a foolish old man.

      1. Except I by Chinese standards I have the flexibility of an average senior citizen. And most of the tai chi teachers were senior citizens as flexible as the younger, newer yoga teachers. It could be quite embarrassing. On the other hand, I did get to take tai chi lessons from a professor in exchange for helping him with his weight lifting.

  3. I mostly lift weights but my ex-wife was a yoga teacher. I lift three times a week, but on off days I either walk or do a mix of body weight, yoga, and martial arts exercises I’ve picked up for the years. Three times a day I do a yoga breathing exercise as meditation. Wait, didn’t I say I mostly lift weights? My anal retentive side might have to add up the minutes.

  6. Anything we do (with positive intentions) becomes a life enhancing experience. Purposeful living adds value and self confidence to our lives. If used wisely, we use these attributes for self growth and development.
    Yoga is a beautiful example. By focusing on your health needs (both physically and mentally) at such a young age, you become the MASTER (to a large extent) of your own destiny.

  9. Great post. Yoga has countless benefits for our body and mind. I Practiced yoga regularly for about two I loved how great it used to make me feel. I have been trying to incorporate it back into my routine again. It was nice to hear that you are in a similar journey. :). X

  10. Going to try some yoga as well! I lift weights and do cardio but now that I’m pregnant I need something easier for the time being and to help me ease back into it after I give birth 🙂

      1. You try doing it if you are not too self conscious 🙂 Because this is where you will find how well you focus. There are many distractions like the sound of breathing of every yoga practitioners 🙂

  11. This sounds like such a great way to incorporate both areas of fitness into your life! I regularly practice and teach yoga, but my experience with weight lifting is minimal. What kind of lifting exercises would you recommend in combination with Yoga for someone who is just starting out with the lifting part? 🙏🏼

  12. I have been an avid yoga practitioner for over ten years. I try to explain to my clients that strength training and yoga go hand in hand. They perfectly complement each other. I’ve written about it a couple of times, once on my blog and again as a guest writer. Also, your Dancer’s pose looks beautiful!
